BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT CLOSE UP Sand Point High School students traveled to Juneau to attend the Close Up Program with their teacher and sponsor Roger Steinbrecher. The students participating were Amy Eubank, June Minneman, Honey Wilson. Jim Morgan. and Paul Ludvick. Close Up is a program that teaches students to become more involved and acquainted with government procedures. While at Juneau the students had the opportunity to sit in on both a house and a senate session. These sessions were preceded by seminars and program staff introductions about the activities that were to be observed Each seminar was conducted by an expert on the subject and consisted of a 15 to 20 minute lecture followed by a question and answer period. The Bill Research Project. a high point of the trip, introduced the government class to issues facing the state and how the issues are handled in the legislative process. All students were given a chance to use the computerized bill retrieval system and to interview the legislators about their roles in government. The class learned how to conduct an interview and they participated in a press conference held by the lieutenant governor . On last day of the trip the students acted as the legislative body in a mock session. They followed parliamentary procedures. voting on bills previously researched. Near the end of the trip the students were able to attend activities
for their own fun and enjoyment. One such activity was the banquet and
dance sponsored by the Close Up staff at the Juneau Yacht Club. AN OPEN LETTER OF CONGRATULATIONS TO Margaret Eubank, EMT II From
